Hangzhou City University Students Join Short Course at Singapore Polytechnic

From 8 to 11 July 2025, Singapore Polytechnic (SP) welcomed 25 students from Hangzhou City University (HZCU) for a specially curated short course on core skills. Held onsite at SP’s Library Innolab 1 & 2, the four-day programme focused on developing key competencies in communication, critical thinking, teamwork, and cultural awareness—skills essential for success in both academic and professional environments.

Designed and delivered by experienced facilitators from SP’s School of Life Skills and Communication, the programme included engaging classroom activities and experiential learning. Students explored four interconnected domains: persuasive communication, critical thinking and problem-solving, career planning and personal development, and navigating cultural diversity in a globalised world.

A key highlight was the learning journey to the Harmony in Diversity Gallery (HDG) and a walking tour of Telok Ayer and Amoy Streets. These experiences offered students a first-hand look at Singapore’s approach to interfaith understanding and social harmony, deepening their reflections on cultural identity and community.

One student reflected, “Singapore’s cultural integration is very impressive. I learned how different religions and ethnic groups can live together respectfully.”

The course structure and delivery were very well received by the participants. Students consistently described the sessions as engaging, relevant, and inspiring, with many noting that they gained not just knowledge, but greater confidence and self-awareness.

“I have become more confident and daring to express myself, even though my English is not very good,” said one student.

In particular, the critical thinking and career planning modules left a lasting impact. Several participants expressed that the programme helped them better understand their personal strengths and future goals. As one shared, “I used to doubt myself a lot. But after this course, I can be proud of who I am.”

The HZCU students came from a wide range of disciplines—including engineering, business, medicine, humanities, law, and tourism—which added depth and diversity to the discussions. The programme was carefully designed to address this variety, ensuring a rich and inclusive learning environment for all.

“The teacher is kind and smart, which impressed me. I feel more confident and am willing to try new things,” said a student from the business faculty.

The programme successfully blended classroom learning with real-world application, providing students with the tools to think critically, communicate effectively, and thrive in diverse environments.
